Villa Esche Chemnitz: Die Bauhauskünstlerin Marianne Brandt

As the final part of their celebration of Henry van de Velde’s 150th birthday the Villa Esche in Chemnitz is currently presenting an exhibition devoted the Chemnitz designer and artist Marianne Brandt: a person whom the organisers, with more than a little justification, refer to as a “successor” of van de Velde.

Born in Chemnitz in 1893 Marianne Brandt entered Bauhaus Weimer in 1924. Following the institution’s forced moved to Dessau in 1925 Marianne Brandt took up a position in the metal workshops under László Moholy-Nagy, and where she worked alongside colleagues such as Wilhelm Wagenfeld.

Following her graduation in 1929 Marianne Brandt worked principally as an industrial designer, including a spell with the company Ruppelwerk in Gotha for whom she developed numerous household objects and fittings. Post World War II Marianne Brandt largely worked as a freelance designer and artist, also undertaking teaching contracts in Dresden and Berlin. Marianne Brandt died in Kirchberg, Sachsen on June 18th 1983

Presenting items from the Industriemuseum Chemnitz and the collection of Frankfurt am Main collector Bernd Freese, Die Bauhauskünstlerin Marianne Brandt at Villa Esche presents a look at Marianne Brandt the person and Marianne Brandt the creative.

Among the highpoints in a brief but highly entertaining exhibition are a metal ball Marianne Brandt used for experimental photography, a delightful coffee percolator Marianne Brandt designed for Ruppelwerk and a number of sketches which beautifully illustrate how Marianne Brandt developed he designs.

Die Bauhauskünstlerin Marianne Brandt at Villa Esche is not a huge exhibition, but is more than enough to provide a delightful overview of Marianne Brandt and her oeuvre. And through the juxtaposition with Henry van de Velde’s magnificent Villa Esche with Marianne Brandt’s time and her place in the history of European art and design.

Die Bauhauskünstlerin Marianne Brandt runs at Villa Esche, Parkstraße 58, 09120 Chemnitz until June 8th 2014.
