“Lobe den Herrn, meine Seele” – A city resounds to festive music

As part of the Grassi Museum for Musical Instruments special exhibition “Lobe den Herrn, meine Seele” exploring the traditions of festive music in Leipzig, the Leipzig University Music Studies department have produced a special film about the background to the October 1863 Psalm concert held in celebration of the defeat of the Turkish forces in Vienna and in particular the Psalm “Lobe den Herrn, meine Seele” composed for the event by Thomaskantor Johann Schelle.

The commentary is in German, but the photography is splendid and as a film it can be enjoyed without having to understand what is being said.
